Background. Despite current medical advances,to this day there is no single medicalintervention to effectively prevent ortreat bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)in both preterm and term infants. Alongwith protective ventilation strategies, variousdrugs are being used or are being researchedat this very moment, with the solepurpose of improving the general outcomefor these patients. Inhaled dry salt microparticles therapy is now one of them.Materials and methods. This report presentsfive patients, diagnosed with severeBPD. All of them received, complementaryto classical BPD management andrespiratory support, continuous inhaleddry salt micro particles, via SaltMed cartridges,for a period of 12 to 30 days. Afteronly 24 hours of administration, we wereable to observe a significant improvementin respiratory function and dynamics. Itwas possible to use a lower fraction of inspiredoxygen (FiO2), mean airway pressure(MAP) and peak inspiratory pressure(PIP) in all mechanically ventilated patients.Higher tidal volumes were recordedand we observed improvement in oxygenationindexes.Conclusion. Continuously inhaled dry saltmicro particles, administered complementaryto classic BPD management, couldimprove respiratory and overall morbidityand mortality in infants with any formof BPD. Further study of these possibleeffects is needed, as there is no data publishedon this matter so far.
